Membership Grades
As a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers, you are eligible for recognition of your experience and knowledge with membership grades.  There are five membership grades, with each offering a distinctive post nominal.  Membership grades are achieved through examinations, an individual case process or as a mature candidate.  The grades take into account education, training and experience within the fire service or fire safety/fire protection industry.

IFE Examinations, Certifications and Diploma
Member grades can be obtained through examinations and achievement of the available certificates and diploma offered by the IFE.  Successfully obtaining a Level 3 certificate or diploma or a level 4 certificate will set the basis for Technician, Graduate or Associate membership grades when coupled with relevant experience.

Individual Case Process
The individual Case Process is an option for members who have achieved post secondary education in the field of fire engineering or fire safety from a recognized program and have suitable experience to obtain equivalency with the IFE's examinations and member grade requirements.

Mature Candidate Route
For individuals who do not have the academic qualifications necessary for membership of the Institution, but are able to demonstrate that in later life an achievement of professional competence comparable to their contemporaries who have achieved their grade of membership by the academic route.  The Mature Candidate Route is typically the most difficult route to a membership grade involving a thorough review of experience and knowledge in a Professional Review Report submitted by the applicant.  Successful candidates of this process in the past have been fire chiefs, deputy fire chiefs, chief fire prevention officers, fire investigators and fire marshals.
