As the demand for better trained firefighters and firefighter applicants becomes more apparent, accredited training and certification are becoming the new standard for those looking to become firefighters or those who wish to ensure they remain trained and competent in the many skills required to perform the many roles demanded by the job today.
Career preparation and pre-service firefighter training programs have traditionally been offered by community colleges and some fire departments. Colleges have traditionally shifted towards an Ontario Fire Marshall approved firefighter curriculum and many are now able to offer National Fire Protection Association Level 1 and Level 2 certifications.
IFE has traditionally been able to certify firefighters in many countries through its examination program. As a firefighter progresses through his/her career and examinations, both the experience and knowledge requirements can speak to the competence of a firefighter becoming an officer. IFE exams in Canada are not the required examination for certification as a firefighter or firefighter applicant. They do however, focus on much of the same fire service and fire science background that most firefighting certifications are based on. IFE Canada Branch has always worked closely with firefighter training and preparation programs to produce qualified and knowledgeable candidates.
With a wealth of firefighting, training and instructional background, the IFE is able to recognize credible and progressive fire training facilities within Canada. These courses and programs undergo a review by the IFE Canada Branch Council and are accredited when they meet the training, methods and instructor requirements. IFE Canada Branch currently accredits training courses for Toronto Fire Services and Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute (FESTI). Several other key partnerships are currently being developed to help provide students with assurances of courses that offer relevant and qualified training towards firefighter certification. Look for an accredited facility when choosing a firefighter training program and look for the IFE Seal on certificates as an assurance of quality instructional and training practices.
