Member Grade

Applicants for the Member grade of membership will:

  • Hold the Membership examination

or

  • Have successfully completed a course (or courses) which has/have been accredited by the Institution as having equivalence with the Membership examination.

or

  • Hold a degree or equivalent in relevant subjects from a recognized university or equivalent academic institution

or

  • Have qualified by examination for membership at an appropriate level of a professional body approved for this purpose by IFE.

Applicants will also have met the relevant initial professional development (IPD) criteria in the following areas:
Knowledge and understanding, theoretical and practical application, provision of technical and managerial leadership, management and supervision skills and to have made a personal commitment to adhere to the code of professional conduct.


Details on these criteria and the information to be submitted in the form of an IPD (Professional Review) Report with an application for Member grade can be found in the IPD fact sheets located in Annexes C, D and E in the document Membership Rules for Titles and Grades

Please note that without an IPD (Professional Review) Report, we will be unable to proceed with your application.

All applications for Member grade must demonstrate continuing professional development (CPD) for the two year period immediately prior to their application.

All applications for Member grade must be supported by 2 corporate members (AIFireE, MIFireE, FIFireE) of the Institution.

Mature Candidate Route

Fire engineers without the formal academic qualifications necessary for the grade of Member may submit an application via the Mature Candidate Route. Applicants will be required to demonstrate 15 years of increasing responsibility in fire engineering and, by submitting a technical paper, that they have achieved a standard of competence comparable to contemporaries who have achieved the Member grade by academic achievement. How long will it take before my application is accepted?

The Applications Panel in Canada sits approximately every four to six weeks. We will review your application and if complete, will forward it on to the UK.  Their Applications Panel also sits approximately every four to six weeks.  When we receive your application, within this period, will affect how quickly it will be reviewed by the Panels and therefore, how soon you will hear from us.
